| Abington predicts $1.5 million deficit for next year’s budget Town (anticipates a 10 percent reduction in state aid) |

ABINGTON —
Officials are projecting a $1.5 million budget shortfall for the next fiscal year because of potentially deep cuts in state aid.
Interim Town Manager Dori R. Jamieson said the town is looking at a possible 10 percent reduction in state aid for the budget year that begins July 1, based on preliminary information from the state.
That is on top of the severe cuts already made in this year’s budget, which saw the loss of 42 school positions, closure of a fire substation and the layoffs of four part-time dispatchers, implementation of furloughs in town departments, reductions in library staff and hours, and other scaled-back services.
The current level-funded town budget of about $34 million is bare bones, officials say.
?It’s been devastating. We have had cuts upon cuts. It’s very bleak,? Jamieson said.
However, it’s too soon to say how departments will be affected, she said.
Department heads have been asked to submit preliminary level-funded budgets for fiscal 2011, which begins July 1, to be presented at the Jan. 25 selectmen’s meeting, Jamieson said.
?It’s early but it needs to be explored,? selectmen Chairman Thomas Corbett said of the impact of a 10 percent state aid cut.
Acting Library Director Deborah Grimmett said the library is forging ahead despite fewer staff and library hours.
?Clearly, any budget deficit will have an impact on the library. That is the bottom line,? said Grimmett.
